General Information

How can government-nonprofit partnerships be used as strategic planning tools? This course will explain the dynamics of how the government and nonprofit sectors relate to one another and teach you how to leverage those relationships to improve our planned environment.

Planning is affected by nonprofit organizations in many ways, some obvious and others less so. This day-long workshop analyzes the current state of the relationship between government and the nonprofit sector, with an emphasis on how that relationship impacts the work of planners. We will review several specific situations to highlight how nonprofit organizations can be effective allies in planning work.

The course will be a mix of lecture, case exercises, and group work targeted toward communicating opportunities for positive interaction between planners, nonprofits and government representatives.

Instructor Bio

Russ Cargo directs the Nonprofit and Civil Society Program in the Institute for Policy and Governance, a university institute at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The Program’s office is located at the National Capital Region Campus in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Since 1994, he has devoted his efforts toward developing the new academic field of nonprofit management and philanthropic studies and developing capacity in the nonprofit sector. He is one of the founders of the Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations (VANNO) and he speaks regularly about the responsibilities of nonprofit boards and the important role nonprofit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play in democratic societies. He has worked with hundreds of organizations in ten countries and throughout the United States and he teaches graduate courses in Nonprofit Management, Nonprofit Law and Ethics, and Nonprofit Governance and Leadership at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Cargo serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise (NCNE), the national organization whose mission is to help nonprofit managers make wise economic decisions. He serves on the Council of Editorial Advisors at BoardSource, the national organization supporting nonprofit boards, and he is President of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council.

Prior to his academic positions, he had over twenty years of work experience in the nonprofit sector, including CEO experience at Colorado Speaks Out On Health and as President of the San Antonio Art Institute. He earned a Master of Art in Art History from Southern Methodist University, a Master of Science in Business Administration from Boston University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management.

Registration

The registration fee of $275 includes continental breakfast and coffee. Participants will also receive a workbook containing course-related materials. Sign up by February 29 to avoid the $50 late fee!

Accreditation

This course is eligible for 0.7 Virginia Tech CEU credits and may qualify for additional continuing education credits.

Course Location
